As two of the founding members of the Irish League back in the late 19th century Cliftonville and Glentoran have obviously been no strangers to each other down through the years.

And as the pair prepare to renew those long standing rivalries once more in the BetMcLean Cup final it's just the latest in a lengthy list of games between the sides that have had some silverware at stake at the end of it.

These encounters stretch back as far as a Belfast Charity Cup final victory for the Reds in May 1886, taking in a few County Antrim Shield deciders along the way - all in the early years of the 20th century - before a 60-year gap when the Glens triumphed in the Gold Cup final in November 1991.

But how do the sides stack up in more recent years? Over the past 30 or so seasons winners medals have been up for grabs on no fewer than six occasions and, to set things up nicely, the 'score' is tied at three victories apiece!

Floodlit Cup - 19th March 1996 - Windsor Park - Cliftonville 3-1 Glentoran
The Floodlit Cup was a competition organised for just over a decade, beginning in the mid-80s, to celebrate the installation of floodlights at many Irish League grounds as a result of Football Trust funding.

Cliftonville got past Omagh Town, Coleraine and Ards to reach the 1996 final, while the Glens accounted for Newry Town, Linfield and Portadown.

In the final Glentoran, looking to lift the trophy for a third time, moved in front just before the half-hour mark through Derek Cooke but Tim McCann levelled for the Reds after breaking clear to lift the ball over keeper Neil Armstrong from the edge of the six yard box.

Marty Quinn's side then moved in front a couple of minutes after the break when Jonathan Cross stabbed the ball home from close range after it bobbled around the area from McCann's delivery.

Paul Stokes then made sure with a header from just outside the box after running onto McCann's cross from the right side of the area as the Reds won the competition for the first - and only - time.

Charity Shield - 8th August 1998 - The Oval - Cliftonville 1-0 Glentoran
Played sporadically over the years, the Charity Shield typically sees the reigning league champions kick off the new season against the recently crowned Irish Cup winners.

The 1998 edition saw Cliftonville, fresh from a first Gibson Cup victory in almost 90 years, make the short journey across Belfast to face the Glens, who had closed out the previous season with yet another Irish Cup success, at The Oval.

The game itself wasn't a classic by any stretch of the imagination but a brief moment of magic settled it in favour of the Reds when, just a couple of minutes into the second half, Tommy McCallion sent Tim McCann clear to send a perfectly judged lob beyond the reach of keeper Wayne Russell into the net.

County Antrim Shield - 2nd February 1999 - Windsor Park - Glentoran 2-0 Cliftonville
Glentoran gained revenge for the Charity Shield defeat later that season, however, when they defeated the Reds by two unanswered goals in the County Antrim Shield decider at Windsor Park.

A fifth Shield final between the sides - but the first in nearly 70 years - saw Glentoran get past Newry Town, Ballymena United and Linfield with the Reds accounting for Crusaders, Ards and Distillery.

Two goals just before the break settled the game in favour of Glentoran.

Andy Kirk opened the scoring on 40 minutes after Colin Nixon sent a high ball into the area which was knocked on by Justin McBride into Kirk's path who duly made no mistake from almost point blank range.

Then, just two minutes after that, Stuart Elliot doubled up with a goal to grace any final. Kirk won possession in the middle of the park and managed to lay the ball off for Elliot who proceeded to bring it forward to a few yards outside the area before unleashing a terrific left-foot effort in off the crossbar giving keeper Michael Ingham no chance.

League Cup - 2nd December 2006 - Windsor Park - Glentoran 1-0 Cliftonville
This years final will be a repeat of the 2006/07 decider, a game which brought a narrow victory for the Glens at Windsor Park in early December.

Paul Millar's side got past Newry City, Loughgall and Donegal Celtic in the group stages followed by defeats of Portadown and Crusaders in the knock-out phases.

For Cliftonville, Dungannon Swifts, Coleraine and Armagh City were accounted for in Group D while Lisburn Distillery and Linfield fell by the wayside in the latter stages.

The final itself was a closely fought affair with Gary Hamilton bagging the only goal of the game around the half-hour mark after taking the ball past the keeper before slotting home from an acute angle.

County Antrim Shield - 29th November 2011 - The Oval - Cliftonville 2-1 Glentoran
After losing four out of the five previous County Antrim Shield finals between the sides Cliftonville finally get the better of Glentoran again in a Shield decider for the first time since the 1925/26 campaign.

The Reds swept Donegal Celtic and Linfield aside enroute to the final with Glentoran seeing off Carrick Rangers and Lisburn Distillery.

In the final itself Cliftonville held the advantage at the break following Martin Donnelly's successfully converted 43rd minute spot-kick, awarded after he had been upended by Ciaran Martyn.

Cliftonville then doubled their advantage three minutes from time courtesy of substitute Joe Gormley who, despite only being on the pitch a few minutes, popped up to fire low into the bottom corner after cutting in from the right onto a Donnelly pass.

Glentoran did pull one back right at the end but Johnny Taylor's effort wasn't enough to inspire Scott Young's men to a late comeback.

Irish Cup - 4th May 2013 - Windsor Park - Glentoran 3-1 Cliftonville
The force was very much with Glentoran when the sides locked horns in the 2013 Irish Cup final at Windsor Park.

Cliftonville, who had despatched Ballinamallard United, Donegal Celtic, Kilmore Rec. and Crusaders earlier in the competition, moved in front on 34 minutes through Joe Gormley's rebound finish after the ball had initially come off Jimmy Callacher from Elliot Morris' block.

That was how it stayed until Andy Waterworth levelled half-an-hour later with an instinctive close range finish after David Howland had knocked on Richard Clarke's pass from the left.

Glentoran, conquerors of Killymoon Rangers, Bangor, Knockbreda and Portadown, then seized the advantage nine minutes into extra-time when Callacher got past defender Aaron Smyth to head home.

And Waterworth subsequently secured the honours for the Glens just a couple of minutes after that with his second of the game, an angled finish past Conor Devlin after he had worked his way into the box.
