Cliftonville won their 7th League Cup on Sunday past and are also still in contention for the Irish Cup, as they have a Semi-Final coming up.

Joe Gormley scored his 7th goal in League Cup finals, and takes his medal tally in the competition to five.

Joe Gormley has also scored the winning goals in Cliftonville’s last two League Cup Final successes.

The last team to win both the League Cup and Irish Cup in the same season was Linfield in the 2007/2008 season.

Linfield are the only team to win the League and the Irish Cup in the same season in the 21st Century, doing so on 8 occasions.

The Blues also won the treble (League, Irish Cup, and the League Cup) on two occasions and the only team to do so in the 21st Century.

Portadown are the only team to win the League Cup outside the topflight in the 21st Century, they won the competition in 2009 with a 1-0 win over Newry City in the final; Portadown went on to win the Championship the same season.

Dungannon Swifts (2018) and Cliftonville (2004) are the only other teams to win the League cup in the 21st Century and finish outside the top 6 in the same season - Cliftonville finished 15th that season and avoided relegation with a playoff win over Armagh City.

The first team to win the League Cup was Linfield in 1987, with a 2-1 win over Crusaders at the Oval.

Linfield have won the League Cup on the most occasions (12)

Coleraine have been runners up in The League Cup the most times in its history (7)

There have been 12 winners of the League Cup since its inauguration in 1987 (9 are currently in this season’s Sports Direct Premiership)

Cliftonville have appeared in the most consecutive finals and also have the most consecutive final wins with (4) (2012/13, 2013/14, 2014/15 & 2015/16)

The most common league cup final having been played seven times is Glentoran v Linfield.

Out of the 25 completed seasons (League, Irish Cup & League Cup) in the 21st century so far there has only been 3 seasons (2014/15, 2016/17 & 2017/18) where either Glentoran or Linfield didn’t win a trophy.

Only two Teams have won the league outside of Belfast in the 21st Century (Larne 2022/23 & 2023/24) and Portadown (2001/02)
