GLENAVON CLAIM THE BOXING DAY BRAGGING RIGHTS
Glenavon claimed the Mid Ulster Boxing Day bragging rights with a two-goal defeat of Portadown at Mourneview Park.
Although chances were at a premium in the first half Glenavon did go in at the break on top when, on 28 minutes, Len O'Sullivan burst into the area down the left and lay the ball back for Peter Campbell to slot past keeper Aaron McCarey.
Paddy McLaughlin's side also threatened when Michael O'Connor flicked the ball on for Christopher Atherton who then found Campbell but his subsequent shot was blocked.
Glenavon thought they had doubled their lead midway through the second half when O'Connor headed home Atherton's cross from the right only for it to be ruled out offside.
Then, in the closing stages, James Doona dragged an effort wide of the target when through on goal.
Portadown were reduced to ten men not long after that when McCarey was shown a straight red card for a foul on O'Connor outside the box before, right at the end, Niall Quinn knocked home Glenavon's second with a left-foot finish that came off the woodwork before hitting the back of the net.
